Tokyo is far more than just the neon chaos of Shibuya or the high-rises of Shinjuku. In Tokyo there is so much more than Shibuya’s crowded streets and Shinjuku’s towering skyscrapers; to really get a feel for this city you will need to delve into the more understated areas where locals relax over coffee poured by hand and spend hours sifting through boxes of unique vinyl records. This week we will take you on a deep dive into three of Tokyo’s most soulful neighborhoods Nakameguro, Shimokitazawa, and Setagaya.
Nakameguro: Where The City Meets The River
Located along the Meguro River, Nakameguro encompasses both natural beauty and urban sophistication. The cherry blossom trees that line the banks of the river create an enchanting sight each spring; however this area of Tokyo has plenty to offer visitors throughout the year if you enjoy good quality aesthetics. This is an area where you can easily spend an entire day exploring independent lifestyle boutiques or simply taking in the view from one of the many canal front restaurants or cafes.
On the Map: Onibus Coffee (a must-visit for serious caffeine connoisseurs), Curry Station Niagara, Epulor LP Bar (a sleek spot to listen to high-fidelity records with a perfectly mixed drink), Meguro Sky Garden.
Shimokitazawa: The Bohemian Heart
Often shortened to “Shimokita,” this neighborhood is the artistic soul of Tokyo. Its narrow, winding streets are a paradise for vintage hunters and music lovers. There’s a distinct “village” feel here that you won’t find anywhere else in the city, with a community of creators that keeps the atmosphere vibrant and unpredictable.
On the Map: Universal Bakes, Masako: Jazz & Coffee (a legendary jazz kissa that feels like stepping back in time.), Shirohige’s Cream Puff Shop (home to the famous Totoro).
Editor’s Tip: Don’t try to rush through these areas. Tokyo’s magic is found in the small details—the way the light hits a bowl of oden or the crackle of a vinyl record in a dimly lit bar.
Setagaya: Tranquility and Tradition
The borough of Setagaya has the perfect way to clear your mind. With most of the area being residential, it has a unique and peaceful atmosphere that feels as though you are miles away from the tourist attractions in Tokyo. You will find many local antique stores that are tucked away plus you will find Tokyo’s most famous cat sanctuary.
On the Map: Setagaya Park , Sky Carrot Observatory, Gotokuji Temple - the iconic “Cat Temple,” birthplace of the Maneki-neko (lucky cat).
