The Most Beautiful Place on Earth in 2026 Has Been Revealed

Time Out magazine has crowned a dramatic, compact mountain range in northern Spain as the world's most beautiful destination for 2026.

Forget the usual tropical resort islands or crowded European capitals. This year, the prestigious title of the “most beautiful place in the world” goes to a rugged, dramatic, and surprisingly compact mountain range tucked away in northern Spain: Picos de Europa.

The top spot was awarded in the latest global ranking compiled by Time Out magazine. While the authors readily admit that any list of “the most beautiful” places is inherently subjective, they guarantee that this one is entirely rooted in ground-level reality.

“Every single beach, lake, city, and valley on this list has been visited and vetted by our global network of travel writers,” the publication stated. “Simply put, they are all worth making the trip to see with your own eyes.”

Why Picos de Europa Took the Crown

What makes this particular Spanish mountain range so spectacular is its bizarre geography. It is one of the most compact mountain networks on the planet, unexpectedly soaring to an elevation of 2,650 meters despite being just 20 kilometers inland from the coast.

Ed Cunningham, a UK-based writer for Time Out, described it as an absolute geographical marvel that creates landscapes of extraordinary beauty. Because the Picos rise so abruptly from the ocean, hikers are treated to panoramas that mix sheer, intimidating limestone gorges and jagged peaks with glimpses of bright sandy beaches and the crashing waves of the Cantabrian Sea.

The national park itself hides an endless array of perfect travel moments. Highlights include the fiercely isolated Naranjo de Bulnes peak, the ancient stone villages of Sotres and Caín, and the brilliant glacial Covadonga lakes. The latter even features a historic pilgrimage sanctuary that looks incredibly precarious, balancing directly over a waterfall.

For those planning a visit, the absolute must-do activity is the Ruta del Cares. Easily one of Spain’s most famous hiking trails, this 23-kilometer round-trip route cuts straight through a spectacular canyon, with long sections of the path literally carved directly into the sheer rock walls.
